Design a Life Beyond Coast FI
Live well. Spend intentionally. Stay flexible.
Coast FI is more than a financial milestone. It can give you more freedom to decide how you spend your time, energy, and money today without losing sight of the future.
Maybe you want to work fewer days, change careers, start a business, travel more, or be more present with your family. Maybe you have already reached your Coast FI number but still do not feel ready to ease up.
Together, we can build a plan that reflects your numbers, your relationships, your values, and the life you actually want to live.
Led by Mariah Hudler, MSW, MBA, CFT. Trauma-informed, neuro-affirming, values-based, anti-perfection, built for real life.
What Is Coast FI?
Coast FI, sometimes called Coast FIRE, is the point where the retirement investments you have already built may be able to grow toward your future retirement goal without additional contributions, based on your timeline and planning assumptions.
You still need enough income to support your life today. You may also decide to keep investing. The difference is that you may no longer need to maximize every retirement contribution to remain on track.
That can create room to make different choices.
You might reduce your work hours, move into a calmer role, take time away for caregiving, start a business, or direct more of your income toward experiences that matter to you now.
A Coast FI number does not tell you what decision to make. It gives you information about the options you may have.

Estimate Your Coast FI Number
A Coast FI calculator can help you explore whether your current retirement investments may grow toward your future goal over time.
How this calculator works
Coast FI (Coast FIRE) is when you have enough invested that, even if you never contribute another dollar, compound growth alone can reach your full financial independence (FI) target by a traditional retirement age. After that, you only need to earn enough to cover living expenses. All dollar amounts are in today’s dollars. Inflation is already accounted for via the real return (investment return minus inflation).
- Am I coasting? Compares your portfolio to today’s Coast FI number. No savings rate needed.
- When do I hit Coast? Uses your current monthly/annual savings to project when your portfolio crosses the Coast line.
- What should I save? Solves for the monthly/annual contribution needed to hit Coast by a chosen age.
- FI number = annual retirement spending divided by safe withdrawal rate (default 4%).
- Coast FI number = FI number discounted back to today using your real return and years until retirement.
- Does not include taxes, investment fees, Social Security, pensions, mortgages ending, or changing spending over time.
The result is an estimate based on the information and assumptions you enter. It cannot account for every market change, career transition, family responsibility, health need, or unexpected season of life.
Use the calculator as the beginning of the conversation.
Once you see the number, ask yourself what reaching Coast FI would actually change. Would you work less? Change careers? Spend more time with your children? Care for a parent? Travel? Take a creative risk? Finally give yourself permission to slow down?
The number matters because of what it may allow you to do.
What Comes After the Coast FI Number?
People often imagine that reaching a major financial milestone will automatically make them feel secure, confident, or fulfilled.
In reality, the number may create a new set of questions.
Can I finally slow down? Should I keep working? How much is enough? How do I spend money without guilt? What happens if my partner and I want different things?
These are human questions, not calculation problems.
Financial flexibility gives you enough stability and choice to make decisions based on your values, relationships, health, and purpose. That may mean working less, working differently, or continuing to work because you genuinely enjoy what you do.
My goal is to help you build a life you do not constantly feel the need to escape from.

I’m Mariah, and My Family Has Lived This
I did not start my financial life with a trust fund or a perfect plan.
I started with debt, graduate school, years of underearning, and a money story shaped by scarcity. My husband and I raised our son, bought homes, navigated moves and career changes, and built toward financial independence while living on the West Coast.
There were mortgages, high living costs, busy seasons, and real life happening along the way.
Reaching Coast FI did not lead us to stop living or contributing. It gave us options.
My husband retired at 50. We brought our son to Aotearoa New Zealand for an extended season of adventure and connection. I redesigned my work around the clients and projects I care about most, and I now work three days a week.
We pursued Coast FI because we wanted greater freedom to live according to our values rather than someone else’s definition of success.
That experience shapes how I work with clients today. The math matters, but so do the people living inside the plan.

As Seen In…

What Financial Flexibility Can Look Like
There is no single version of financial freedom that everyone should pursue.
For one person, flexibility may mean working three days a week. For someone else, it may mean taking a sabbatical, traveling with their family, caring for aging parents, returning to school, volunteering, starting a business, or having the ability to decline work that no longer fits.
Your path will be shaped by your family, health, career, culture, relationships, responsibilities, opportunities, and values.
Especially in expensive communities, financial flexibility may require thoughtful trade-offs rather than perfect optimization. The goal is to create a life that feels sustainable and meaningful to you.
Coast FI for Couples and Families
Two people can look at the same account balances and feel completely different.
One partner may see the numbers and feel ready to ease up. The other may still feel nowhere near safe. Neither person is necessarily wrong. They may be interpreting the same financial information through different experiences, beliefs, and definitions of security.
The next step is understanding the life behind the number.
What would change if one person worked less? How would caregiving responsibilities shift? What level of spending feels comfortable to both people? Which risks feel reasonable, and which create too much stress?
In our work together, we look at the numbers, discuss your different money stories without blame, and build a financial rhythm both people can live with.
Is Coast FI Right for You?
Coast FI may be worth exploring when the life you want no longer fits comfortably inside the financial plan you have been following.
You may be wondering whether you can work fewer hours, leave a stressful job, let one partner spend more time at home, travel more, move, start a business, or enjoy more of your money today while still preparing for tomorrow.
You may also be approaching your Coast FI number but feeling more uncertain than you expected.
Do we actually have enough? What happens if the market changes? Should we keep investing? What if one partner feels ready and the other still feels afraid?
Coast FI can provide a useful framework, but it is not a one-size-fits-all destination. Your version of financial freedom should reflect your life.
How Do I Get to Coast FI?
The Financially Flexible Method™
Building financial flexibility requires more than following someone else’s savings blueprint. Your roadmap needs to fit the life you are living and the future you are trying to create.
That is why I developed the Financially Flexible Method™, a practical, psychology-informed framework that brings together financial planning principles, emotional awareness, values clarification, and intentional action.

Assess
We begin by understanding where you are today, financially, emotionally, and relationally.
We identify what is working, where you feel stuck, and which beliefs, habits, or patterns may be influencing your decisions. We also review your current financial position and the assumptions behind your Coast FI projections.

Align
Next, we clarify what matters most to you.
Your money should support the life you want to live. We explore your values, relationships, priorities, responsibilities, and vision for the future so your decisions feel intentional rather than automatic.

Act
Finally, we turn that clarity into a realistic roadmap.
Whether you are working toward Coast FI, considering a career change, preparing to work less, building a business, or creating more time for your family, you will leave with practical next steps and a framework for navigating future decisions with greater confidence.
What Makes My Approach Different?
Many financial conversations focus primarily on numbers. Many therapeutic conversations focus primarily on emotions. Meaningful financial wellbeing requires an understanding of both.
As a Financial Strategist and Coach and Certified Financial Therapist, I help people understand the practical, emotional, relational, and behavioral factors shaping their relationship with money.
We will discuss your investments, income, spending, goals, and planning assumptions. We will also explore the beliefs you have inherited about work, success, security, generosity, retirement, and what it means to have enough.
We may look at how your body responds to financial uncertainty, how relationships influence your decisions, and how caregiving responsibilities, career opportunities, social expectations, and the cost of your current lifestyle affect your choices.
My work draws from Financial Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Training while remaining practical and action-oriented.
Financial flexibility becomes a way of thinking, deciding, and living, not simply a number you reach.
Your Coast FI Roadmap
Whether you are beginning to explore Coast FI or wondering whether you are ready to make your next move, we will create a roadmap that connects your financial position with the life you want to build.
We will assess your Coast FI readiness, clarify your priorities, explore different work and spending scenarios, identify the barriers keeping you stuck, and develop realistic next steps.
You will also leave with a flexible decision-making framework you can continue using as your life, family, work, and goals change.
Coast FI can give you the freedom to make more intentional choices today while continuing to care for your future.

Frequently Asked Questions About Coast FI
How much do I need for Coast FI?
A calculator can provide an estimate. A more complete plan also considers taxes, inflation, income changes, family needs, risk tolerance, and the life you expect to live before retirement.
Is Coast FI different from FIRE?
Coast FI describes an earlier milestone. Your retirement investments may be on track for the future, but you still need income to support your current life.
What is the difference between Coast FI and Barista FIRE?
Barista FIRE generally describes using part-time or lower-stress work to cover some or all of your current expenses while invested assets remain in place.
Some people may move between these approaches as their life changes.
Can I reach Coast FI while living in California?
The question is not whether your life matches a generic Coast FI example. The question is whether the plan works with your actual life.
Can I pursue Coast FI with children?
Childcare, education, housing, healthcare, parental leave, and career changes may all affect how much flexibility feels comfortable.
Can Coast FI work if I am self-employed or own a business?
Variable income, business risk, taxes, benefits, and retirement contributions still need to be considered when evaluating your position.
Should I stop investing after reaching Coast FI?
You may continue contributing, reduce your contributions, redirect money toward other priorities, or make different choices during different seasons. The right decision depends on your goals, assumptions, comfort with risk, and current needs.
How do I know whether I have enough?
We can evaluate the math, test different scenarios, clarify what “enough” means to you, and create a decision-making process that helps you respond when conditions change.
What if my partner is not ready?
Instead of trying to convince one person to accept the other’s position, we explore what each person is protecting, what each person fears, and what conditions would help both of you move forward with greater confidence.
Do I need a financial planner?
My work focuses on financial strategy, coaching, decision-making, money psychology, and helping you connect your financial choices with your values and relationships. Investment management, tax advice, legal advice, and other regulated services may require separate professionals.
